The Story Behind the Scally Hat
People ask about the pirate logo and the Scally Hat all the time. This isn’t just branding, it’s a life story built from imagination, heritage, and working-class pride.
I come from a blue-collar background. Raised poor, but proud. Never haughty. Always humble. I didn’t grow up with much, but I did have one thing, an imagination that never knew limits.
When we moved into an old farmhouse at the end of a long gravel road, my dad found my first TV in the attic. An old black-and-white 13-inch set. Four or five channels if you were lucky. That became my escape. That old farmhouse at the end of the gravel road became the beginning of everything. That black-and-white TV wasn’t just entertainment, it was a doorway.
That’s where pirates came in. Not the history book version, but the adventure version. Freedom, chaos, humor, and figuring things out as you go.
The Goonies wasn’t just a movie it became a belief system. Somewhere out there, there’s still a map waiting to be found.
Pirates and the Imagination
Pirates weren’t history to me, they were freedom. A way of thinking where you adapt, survive, and keep moving. Stories like The Goonies reinforced that mindset curiosity, loyalty, and the belief that discovery is always possible.
The Search for Identity
I was adopted, and that truth naturally led to questions about where I came from.
Later in life, I took a DNA test and found I am 78 percent Irish. That changed nothing and everything at the same time.
I already felt connected to Irish humor, storytelling, stubbornness, and spirit long before I ever saw the results.
The Irish Connection and the Pirate Queen
One of the most powerful figures tied to Irish maritime history is Grace O’Malley, the Pirate Queen of Ireland. She commanded ships, led crews, and stood toe-to-toe with Queen Elizabeth I. That kind of energy stuck with me.
The Scally Cap
I’ve always been drawn to fashion with character, flat caps, fedoras, anything with history in it. The flat cap, often called a scally cap, was worn by dock workers, laborers, and working men who lived by effort, humor, and grit.
The “Scally” idea comes from that working-class dock energy, men who worked hard, played hard, and didn’t ask for permission. Scallywag wasn’t about crime, it was about spirit. Freedom with responsibility. Humor with grit. A little mischief, but always heart.

This isn’t random branding. It’s everything that shaped me, imagination, Irish roots, working-class pride, and a lifelong love of adventure.
